A couple days in Savannah

Good morning! You may ask why I am sitting inside on a beautiful Pinellas county day. Well of course I'm going to tell you, and after I rant I'll continue on to the Savannah blog.

WARNING-RANT AHEAD. you many want to skip over to the PHOTOBLOG BELOW

Mark and Joe left about 7 this morning for a half day fishing trip. After much discussion yesterday and this morning about how I wanted them to take the ONE set of keys to this place with them and I would be fine, they left me the keys! So now instead of my original plan of going out for the day to visit some places across the bridge, I am here in the condo. I guess it's not all bad because I am finally doing this blog, BUT I am sort of stuck here until they get back. Yes I could go down to the beach or someplace local, but if I go too far away I'll just have to turn around and come back to let them in with all the fish. So what's the use of going anywhere? So-enough bitching-maybe it's ok that I have to stay local-Mark is going home tomorrow so I guess I can hang around and wait for him a bit. But my independent streak is a bit pissed about the whole thing, and never happy about this one set of keys business. What a pain!

ok, enough venting-on to the story.

As you probably know, I drove down here by myself, and I was a little apprehensive about how much driving I could a) do in one day, and b) do in successive days. I drive a lot for a living but normally have a long break in between six hour drives, so I decided to stop in Savannah for a day before tackling Florida. I was hoping to meet my friend Carla, who lives down the road, but she is busy with her new business (St Simons Elopements) so we'll have to meet some other time. I am thrilled for her BTW.

It turns out that I'd be in Savannah at one of the busiest times of the year-St Patrick's Day! I'm not much for the craziness that goes along with such things (I love crowds but too many people is too many people) but decided to spend two nights there and leave on St Patty's Day itself. It worked out well cause I was able to people watch while still avoiding the craziness of parade day, although all the locals I talked to thought I was nuts for leaving without experiencing it-maybe another time.

So-I arrived in Savannah on Sunday night after driving from outside Richmond VA. The hotel for the first night was right on the river with a beautiful view

I won't tell you about the history of the building, but the whole area is called Factor's Walk and it was built into the river bank way back when. Olglethorpe arrived with the first settlers in 1733-for more history, check out Wiki on Savannah.

View of the hotel from River St

After a much needed captain and coke, I took a stroll along River St and the area.

More shots on Broughton St-sort of the main commercial strip

Then I just started wandering, ending up back at the hotel where the noise of the revelers right outside on River st kept me up kind of late-oh well.

Sunrise the next morning over the river-time for a stroll through Savannah. Yes I did some other things, like go to the spa, see a couple house museums, eat and drink, yada yada yada, but I am not in the mood to describe all that. Your lucky day I guess-so just look at the pictures.

Part of the line waiting to get in to Paula Deen's restaurant-I think her stardom has gone to her head-what happened to the civilized practice of making a reservation?

Back to the stroll

I don't usually go on ghost tours, but since this one included a pub crawl I deemed it acceptable. I got lucky because our tour guide was a very knowledgeable local, AND there was another tour guide taking the tour! So I heard ALL the town ghost stories and visited some creepy places-so much fun! Tara Tours is the name if you are there sometime.

Thanks for joining me on my trip!

So-have you ever been to Savannah? What did you think?
